jennifer hudson heroine addict 'GMA': Jennifer Hudson talks playing a heroin addict in Alicia Keys' new movie

The new Alicia Keys-produced movie “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete” will give audiences the chance to see a new side of Jennifer Hudson. The “American Idol” alum, who has gone on to star in a number of feature films, plays a heroin addict in new flick.

In speaking with Manhattan magazine, Hudson recently revealed that she had a tough time connecting to her character Gloria because she’s lived her life sober. “I had no reference point. I’m 31 and I’ve never, ever, ever had a drink or done a drug in my entire life,” she told the magazine.

When Hudson and Keys came on “Good Morning America” to promote “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete,” Hudson opened up about how she did get into the mindset of a heroin addict. She says she spent a lot of time talking with an addict named Lisa, and channeled that woman into the character of Gloria.

“If I don’t have anything to connect from, why don’t I find someone to connect to,” she says of her mindset on the subject.

“The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete” hits theaters on Oct. 11.
