sam champion good morning america abc 325 'Good Morning America's' Sam Champion: 'Weather is important, and it is news'Zap2it: With “Good Morning America” having made such ratings strides, how has it been for you from the inside looking out?

Sam Champion: It is joyous to work with people like this who are the best at what they do. There is a need for every one of them to do what they do, and they want to do it. And we want to show up here and to be together.

There isn’t anyone who isn’t giving everything they’ve got, and it’s fantastic just to be around that energy, at what is a crazy time on the planet for news. And for weather.

Zap2it: You’ve been on the go a lot this year, for “GMA” as well as other ABC News programs, as part of the network’s “Extreme Weather Team.” Do you always have a bag packed?

Sam Champion: We have several. It wasn’t that long ago that a garden-variety reporter or correspondent would handle weather stories. Now, there’s an entire unit that is focused on weather, and often, we’re the lead of whatever the next ABC News show is. And we have to be ready to respond.

Zap2it: How did the Extreme Weather Team come to be?

Sam Champion: The folks at ABC News got it. They understood. Our conversation with them was, “Look at your news rundown. No matter what news story you’re going to lead with that day, I can tell you that a weather system affects more people directly than are affected by whatever that story may be.”

Weather is important, and it is news … and it should be considered as such.
