The New York Times might not have been a big fan of Guy Fieri‘s new Times Square restaurant, Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar, but the Food Network personality thinks reviewer Peter Wells took his scathing takedown of the establishment a bit too far. Even so, Fieri says he won’t be cancelling his subscription to the paper any time soon.
“I’ve read reviews. There’s good and there’s bad in the restaurant business,” Fieri says on “Today.” “That one went overboard.”
Fieri admits that the restaurant isn’t “perfect right now,” but added that he put his “heart and soul into it.” While he feels some people “see me as a TV guy,” Fieri sees himself as a chef first and things opinions on Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar will change as time passes and the restaurant gets into the swing of things.
As for Wells, Fieri seems to think that the NY Times reviewer was out to hate the restaurant.
“He came in with a different agenda,” Fieri says, later adding, “Great way to make a name for yourself, go after a celebrity chef that’s not a New Yorker.”
In the review in question, Wells posed a series of increasingly harsh questions to Fieri, including, “Guy Fieri, have you eaten at your new restaurant in Times Square?” Wells writes. “Have you pulled up one of the 500 seats at Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar and ordered a meal? Did you eat the food? Did it live up to your expectations? Did panic grip your soul as you stared into the whirling hypno wheel of the menu, where adjectives and nouns spin in a crazy vortex?”
Wells gave the establishment zero out of a potential four stars.
