joel de la fuente hemlock grove season 2 'Hemlock Grove' Season 2 answers Season 1 questions 'pretty quickly,' says Joel de la Fuente

“Hemlock Grove” seemed to provide more questions than answers in its Season 1 finale, but apparently that won’t continue long into Season 2. Actor Joel de la Fuente, who plays Dr. Johann Pryce, promises that the open mysteries will be resolved shortly after the new season premieres.

“There are so many more surprises and mysteries so far in Season 2, but one of the awesome things that happens is a lot of questions from the first season are answered pretty quickly and clearly right off the bat,” he tells Zap2it and other reporters at a set visit in October 2013. “I think that if people did watch Season 1, the people that watched then and are watching Season 2, I think it’s quite satisfying right from the get-go because it picks up, starts moving, answers a lot of things you might have on your mind so we can get on to the next things, which are also kind of mysterious.”

De la Fuente admits that there’s been a learning curve in Season 2 now that the show has moved past Brian McGreevy’s book and new showrunner Chic Eglee has come on board. But that’s been exciting for him as an actor.

“It’s like the boat’s cleared the moorings and now it’s whoa, we’re in this big creepy weird place,” he says. “They have taken it as their charge obviously to move the story forward, and part of what that is is getting deeper into all the characters. We left many of the characters at the end of Season 1 in these pretty crazy positions. Like, a lot of crazy things happened. They’re all moving into the next phase of their lives, and people are starting to manifest themselves more fully, let’s just put it that way.”

Expect to learn more about Pryce, de la Fuente promises. He is excited about the fact Pryce’s lab was built, and that Pryce’s fascination with “life and death” will “manifest itself a lot more.”

As for the rest of the characters on the show, de la Fuente teases, “Olivia has a whole new journey ahead of her as well. Everybody. It all just gets deeper and fuller, and I think they’ve really taken that up in a really exciting way. I’m really looking forward to playing those things. … I love my relationship with Olivia in the first season, so I was curious at the end of Season 1 what Olivia would be up to, what’s she dealing, how do I feel about her, and so those questions are answered.”

Though de la Fuente has found that some people have responded well to “Hemlock Grove” and others have hated it, he says that’s the type of response the cast and crew are hoping for.

“The writers are taking risks, the actors are taking risks. When we succeed, something really wonderful can happen, and when we fail, sometimes it just does not work,” he says. “That’s kind of how we’re approaching things. We’re not aiming for middle-of-the-road stuff. We’re trying to create something different.”

“Hemlock Grove” Season 2 premieres in its entirety on July 11 on Netflix.
