homeland season 3 finale carrie 'Homeland' Season 4: Carrie goes into the field, Showtime chief saysShowtime Entertainment president David Nevins says he knew ahead of time that Season 3 of “Homeland” would build toward “a major reset.” Thursday (Jan. 16), he offered up a couple of hints about what that reset might look like.

“This is a show that is fundamentally about a field operative” in Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), Nevins says at the TCA winter press tour. “And with the exception of the very beginning of Season 1 and the very end of Season 3, we haven’t seen her out in the field operating. The likely plan for next year is you will see her on the ground in a foreign capital, doing her job.”

That jibes with what “Homeland” executive producer Howard Gordon told Zap2it recently: That Carrie and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) will remain front and center on the series, even though Saul left the CIA at the end of Season 3. “My expectation is he’ll be central” in Season 4, Nevins says of Saul. “He’ll be important.”

The “Homeland” writers have only presented the broad strokes of next season to Nevins so far, but he expects to hear more in a few weeks.

“Those guys are working right now here. Next week they’re going to spend the week in Washington and have an amazing itinerary,” Nevins says. “They’re being set up on the top floor of a CIA club and [will] spend some time with real people. There are a couple things they’re working on. We’ll see what comes back in a month.”

“Homeland” will likely return in the fall on Showtime.
