Hadley is back at PPTH, and Martha is becoming an intern, so it’s time for her to either begin her surgery internship or stay with House in the newly-created diagnostics intern position. She ends up picking surgery and impresses her new boss enough that he doesn’t kick her out when she decides she can’t tear herself away from her last House patient, a 16-year-old girl named Kendall who is on the verge of becoming the youngest person to sail around the world.
Masters gets back on House’s team determined to figure out what’s wrong with Kendall, her prodigy kindred spirit. Martha ultimately comes up with the diagnosis that leads to the discovery of cancer in Kendall’s left arm bone, which means Kendall will have to have her arm amputated and miss the chance to set her sailing record. Kendall refuses, saying she’ll have her arm amputated after she sets the record. She somehow gets her parents to agree to this, much to Martha’s horror. Seeing no other options to saving Kendall’s life, Martha takes matters into her own hands and drugs Kendall with medicine that causes her heart to stop.
The Cottages think Kendall’s body is reacting to the cancer and Martha is able to use that to convince Kendall’s parents to sign the consent form to remove her arm. Kendall wakes up with no hope of setting her precious sailing record and only one arm, which is a nasty surprise. Martha realizes that she can’t practice medicine this way and leaves House’s team for good.
