“How I Met Your Mother” is not a typical comedy, and as the series’ gets older and older, its premise demands a certain bit of finesse when discussing an end game.
Naturally, the recent news that CBS had ordered an additional two seasons of the series had a lot of fans wondering if 8 would be end-game for the series. And the short answer, apparently, is “no.”
“Right now we’re contracted to go through season 8, and at that point, there is every chance that that’s the end of ‘How I Met Your Mother,'” says Bays. “But we are open to doing this as long as we feel we have stories to tell, and, of equal importance, as long as people want to watch it.”
It’s hard to argue with that. Though the cast is only contracted through Season 8, and he mentions that doing the show without any one of them wouldn’t feel right — nor would he have it carry on without himself or co-creator Craig Thomas running the show on a day-to-day basis.
“If we did a ninth season or a tenth season,” he says, “it would be because Craig and I have a story to tell and we’re really invested and still want to do it.”
You heard him. It could be 2015 before we get our “Mother” — though, by that point, we’re pretty sure there’ll be some sort of temporal snafu with the Future Ted storyline.
How old were those kids when he started telling the story?
