i-wanna-marry-harry-matthew-hicks-FOX.jpg“I Wanna Marry Harry” is the latest offering in the reality TV romance genre, but this one comes with a twist — Matthew Hicks is the eligible bachelor, and it’s no coincidence he bears a striking resemblance to Britain’s Prince Harry. That is why he was cast, after all.

“I had pictures on a lookalike website and so I had a profile up online and a production company got in touch with me via that. They sort of head-hunted me,” Hicks tells Zap2it with a laugh. “They said we’ve got a show coming up, we’re looking to cast someone in the role of Prince Harry, what do you think? And I had no idea what the show was going to be, so I just said yeah, sure, let’s go along with it, and I went to a few interviews and somehow landed the role and it all escalated from there.”

The show certainly can’t come right out and say that Hicks is Prince Harry, but it is not shying away from making the 12 bachelorettes think that he is. It employs everything from a photoshopped picture of Hicks and Harry’s brother, Prince William, to employing a security detail and house staff at an English castle to putting Hicks through a week-long crash course in all things Harry, which Hicks says made him a bit nervous.

“It was quite a daunting task. There was a lot to carry off and to hold up the charade for the whole five weeks of filming,” says Hicks, adding that he kept up the facade the entire time. “Right until the very end. Every time I opened my mouth, I had to think about what I was saying and
use the information I’d learned in the week prior to going into it. I
kept the charade up the whole time pretty much.”

matthew-hicks-i-wanna-marry-harry-FOX.jpgAs for potentially finding love, Hicks didn’t interview with the production team for that express purpose because, as he said, he didn’t know exactly what the show was when they approached him about it. But once he got into the process, it became more about finding a special someone.

“I was always open to the idea [of finding love],” says Hicks. “I thought it’d be a lot of fun, it’s a very different way to meet a group of girls, so why not get involved and have fun for the duration of filming? And if I come out the other end with a potential relationship, then even better.”

And we had to ask — do any of them really think he’s Prince Harry?

“Having seen the show, it would appear that they did,” says Hicks. “But having spoken to them during the process, I think maybe three or four did believe it, some were on a middle ground and another three or four probably didn’t. It’s a good mixture.

“But there was a seed of doubt in all their minds, which I think is all the show needs to be a success.”

“I Wanna Marry Harry” premieres Tuesday (May 20) at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
