Apple held its big press conference on Sept. 10 and announced many new pieces of Apple tech that have been speculated about for months. The iPhone 5 is going away and will be replaced with the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, while iOS 7 got its official release date.

“The business has become so large that this year we’re going to replace the iPhone 5, and we’re going to replace it with not one but two new designs,” Apple CEO Tim Cook says. “This allows us to serve even more customers.”

As previously reported, the two new iPhones will be the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S. The 5C will be a cheaper, plastic version of the iPhone 5 that comes in five colors: green, yellow, white, light blue and light red. In addition, six $29 color cases will be released as well specifically for the 5C.

The 5C will feature a new 8-megapixel camera with a hybrid IR filer, 3x video zoom and improved FaceTime camera. In addition, the phone will have a 4-inch display, A6 chip and a larger battery than the iPhone 5. On contract, the 16GB will cost $99 and 32GB will cost $199.

As for the iPhone 5S, Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller says it’s “the most forward-thinking phone anyone has ever made.” It will come in silver, gold and black, and features a new home button just like previously reported. Instead of a square, it features a ring around the home button.

The 5S will have an A7 chip and will be the world’s first 64-bit phone. Fortunately the phone is backward compatible, so developers won’t need to worry about continuing to make 32-bit apps. The new iPhone will be up to two times faster thanks to its CPU performance, and will allow for greater gaming experiences because it runs OpenGP ES 3.0. There also will be an M7 chip that will be used for more health and fitness apps.

The camera on the 5S will be new and improved, with bigger pixels and a larger aperture and sensor. Perhaps the biggest news for the iPhone 5S is the confirmation of the fingerprint

scanner. The Touch ID will read a user’s fingerprint at a very detailed level using 500 ppi resolution and scanning sub-epidermal skin layers for 360 degree readability, meaning it can read your finger from any angle. As expected, it’s built into the home button with a metal ring that senses the owner’s finger. The thumbprint can also be used instead of an Apple ID password to buy apps.

“Your fingerprint is one of the best passes in the world. It’s always with you, and no two are exactly alike,” Senior Vice President of Design Jony Ive says of the scanner.

The iPhone 5S will cost $199 for the 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB and $399 for the 64 GB on-contract. Also available are leather cases for $39.

Meanwhile, iOS7 is launching on Sept. 18 and will be free to download. It includes a new camera with built-in filters, and also the iWork package which will be free for all new iOS devices.

iPhone 5C will be available for pre-order on Sept. 13, and both it and the 5S will be available to purchase on Sept. 20. Meanwhile, the iPhone 4S 8 GB model will remain around and be available for free with contracts. The new iPhones will be available in 100 countries and on 270 carriers before the end of the year.
