Jada Pinkett Smith sat down with “HuffPost Live’s” Marc Lamont Hill to promote her documentary, “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners.” When Hill asked about the rumors that plague Smith’s marriage to “Men In Black 3” star Will Smith, Jada had a lot to say about “the most persistent” of the rumors: that she and Will have an open marriage.
“I think people get that idea because Will and I are very relaxed with one another and I think because, from how I’ve answered questions,” says Jada. “I’ve always told Will, you can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be OK. Because at the end of the day Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be, and that’s not for me to do for him.”
Jada says Will has been there through the most difficult times, “and so that’s something you can never take away. A lot of other things, you never know, other things might change. But one thing is for sure: I love him deeply and he is my best friend.” Jada points out, “I don’t think it’s easy to be married to anyone.”
Jada called a string of divorce rumors in 2012 “ridiculous,” telling Gala magazine, “Every year, one celebrity couple is under the microscope. This year, unluckily, it’s us!” For years, the couple has been plagued by rumors they are actually gay, or that they are swingers. Jada once told an Atlanta radio station, “At the end of the day, people have to believe what they have to believe … I’ll tell you what, it’s too hard to be in a pretend marriage. Life’s too short for that one.”
