Based on a 1985-1988 cartoon (which was based on a Hasbro line of Barbie-like rocker dolls), “Jem and the Holograms” follows the adventures of Jerrica Benton — better known as Jem, the lead singer of the Holograms. The rest of the band is made up of Jem’s friends Shana (Perrineau) and Aja (Kiyoko) and her sister, Kimber (Scott). Jon M. Chu is directing the live-action adaptation, which has reportedly already begun shooting.
In addition to the old girl band themes — and presumably the Holograms’ rivalry with the nefarious Misfits — the film version is expected to include “themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age.” An orphaned Jem and her friends will be traveling across Los Angeles on a musical scavenger hunt, looking for a message left by the girl’s father.
No release date has been announced for the movie. The Hollywood Reporter first announced this casting.
