The old guard takes on the new guard in the 2012 Summer Olympics beach volleyball finals. On Tuesday (Aug. 7), April Ross and Jen Kessy upset the Brazilian team of Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Silva in three sets (15-21, 21-19, 15-12) to advance to the gold medal match.
Kessy and Ross, playing in their first Olympics, will be facing none other than fellow U.S. beach volleyball team Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings, the two-time defending gold medalists. It will be just the second time the two teams have faced off and the first time, at an AVP tournament in 2008, Kessy/Ross upset May/Walsh.
Should be a terrific match. May/Walsh are coming off a close victory over China’s Xue Chen and Zhang Xi (22-20, 22-20) and Kessy/Ross are coming off handing the Brazilian team their first ever set losses at this Olympic games.
The two U.S. women’s volleyball teams face off Wednesday, Aug. 8 at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.
