Just in case you weren’t sure where comedian Jim Carrey
stood in the fight for gun control, he’s got a new video that explains his position pretty clearly. The video is a spoof of the classic TV show “Hee-Haw,” in which Carrey plays both noted gun advocate Charlton Heston
, as well as a character named Lonesome Earl.
The character leads a band called The Clutterbusters, as they perform their song “Cold Dead Hand,” which is a reference to a famous National Rifle Association slogan, “I’ll give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.” Carrey’s band is made of of people dressed as Mahatma Ghandhi, John Lennon, and Abraham Lincoln, who were all killed by guns.
Prior to its release, Carrey posted a series of interestingly spelled tweets
Sunday, defending the video, and blasting those who don’t agree with him. “‘Cold Dead Hand’ is abt u heartless motherf***ers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids. Sorry if you’re offended,” he writes before adding, “How abt developing more non-lethal forms of self-defense? Too sensible?!”
Minutes later he continued, writing, “No 1 is answering my suggestion of developing non-lethal self-defense! I guess that wouldn’t satisfy our national addiction to violence!” He ended his rant referencing a similar message from Yoko Ono
last week, tweeting, “Over a million ppl have been killed by guns in the US since John Lennon was shot. Look no further than your own backyard for WMDs,” before asking, “Do we possess guns in America or do guns possess us?”
Carrey went back to tweeting about gun control Monday morning, informing his followers that his bodyguard doesn’t carry clips that hold one hundred bullets, before writing, “I get it. U don’t wnt 2 be told wht to do. So mch so tht u may support wht u know in your heart is wrong. Thn u feel guilty n angry abt it.”
For the record, Carrey’s next movie is “Kick-Ass 2,” which released a trailer
loaded with guns and violence. In fact, Carey himself wields a gun in the clip.
