jj abrams gi vertical J.J. Abrams locked in as 'Star Trek 2' directorIt’s official: J.J. Abrams has committed to directing the “Star Trek” sequel.

Abrams, who directed the first film in the franchise’s restart and is coming off “Super 8,” has started pre-production work on the sequel, Vulture reports. Reports earlier this summer had him getting close to signing on as director (he’s also producing), but he’s all in now. Filming is scheduled to start in the winter.

Among the reasons for the delay, Vulture says, was that co-writer Alex Kurtzman was finishing up his first feature as a director, “Welcome to People.” He’s done now, and he and fellow writers Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof should have a “Star Trek” script finished in the next few weeks.

The delay also means that we won’t see the sequel in June 2012, the release date Paramount had originally scheduled. A winter 2012 or summer 2013 date is more likely.
