jon voight javier bardem penelope cruz israel gaza gi Jon Voight slams Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz over Israel Gaza letter

Jon Voight (“Ray Donovan”) is not happy with fellow actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. In fact, Voight is so unhappy that he penned an open letter criticizing them for their stance on the current conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territory of Gaza.

In a guest column posted to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday (Aug. 4), Voight angrily decried the Spanish actors’ stance on the current Middle East situation. Both Cruz and Bardem had signed another open letter asking that Israel end its offensive against the Gaza Strip, citing the almost 2,000 Palestinian lives lost.

This doesn’t fly with Voight.

“My name is Jon Voight and I am more than angry,” the letter begins. “I am heartsick that people like Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem could incite anti-Semitism all over the world and are oblivious to the damage they have caused.”

Voight then goes on to explain the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in terms of terrorism against “the only democratic country in that region” (a disputed point). He does not mention the Palestinian casualties but instead points out the triple murder of Israeli teenagers seen as the inciting incident for the current conflict.

In addition, Voight makes the valid point that speaking against Israel could lead to a surge in anti-Semitism throughout the world.

At the end of the open letter, Voight seeks to shame the actors into retracting their positions. “You have been able to become famous and have all your monetary gains because you are in a democratic country: America,” Voight says, ignoring the considerable success both Cruz and Bardem have had in their native countries. “You should hang your heads in shame. You should all come forth with deep regrets for what you did, and ask forgiveness from the suffering people in Israel.”

As of this writing, there has been no response from the targets of Voight’s article. It doesn’t seem likely that they will agree with him though.
