Julianne Hough is returning to “Dancing With the Stars” as a judge alongside Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba, but one ballroom pro isn’t sure that’s a good idea — especially since her brother, Derek Hough, is set to compete in Season 19.
Karina Smirnoff tells Us Weekly that she’s not sure it’s ethical that Hough will be able to judge the competition while her brother competes. “I don’t know if it’s ethical that she is judging while her brother is competing,” she says, although she thinks Hough is “wonderful, gorgeous, and talented.”
Smirnoff will be competing against Derek, a four-time champion, when the show returns, and says she’s not sure that she would be able to maintain impartiality toward a family member.
“I may be the most fair person in the world, but if my mom is dancing and she trips, I would be like, ‘Well, I didn’t see that,'” Smirnoff says. “That is my mother, and I will go stand by her side and support her regardless. Do I think it’s fair? No. But it is a TV show. That is what we have to remember. It’s not necessarily the Bible, it’s just a TV show.”
