Justin Bieber‘s mother Pattie Mallette might be the parent of one of the most successful musicians on the planet, but her life wasn’t always so full of sunshine and roses. She opens up in “Nowhere But Up, Teen Edition: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom,” a new teen edition of her memoir, about the struggles she had as a child following her parents’ divorce at age 2.

At age 3, Mallette writes in her memoir about how she was sexually abused, and then turned to drinking, drugs and a suicide attempt in her late teens. Mallette gave birth to Bieber at age 18, and eventually turned to Christianity to help guide her life. She shared her story to help those struggling just like she did, and she’s already had people come to tell her it worked.

“There was this one young man. He was probably late teens, early 20s. He said, ‘You know, who knew that your story could relate so much with me and that I would have so many similarities with the things that you went through,'” Mallette tells the Associated Press. “I mean, his sister’s been shot, but he’s been through so many similar emotions and so many similar circumstances.”

The one person whose troubles Mallette won’t open up about it her son. She opted not to talk about his seeming downward spiral during the AP interview.

“He wants me to continue to respect his boundaries and my relationship with him. Everybody has their own opinion, and everybody wants to sensationalize everything,” she says. “You have to sort of let them make some of their own decisions. Me, personally, I would love to be with him all the time and to be able to ground him and deal with his problems and do all of that stuff, but at some point the parenting style changes. I hope to still be a respected voice in his ear.”

“Nowhere But Up, Teen Edition: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom” hit store shelves on July 1.
