Looks like it’s a week for celebrities tripping over issues of race.

After Paula Deen’s recent N-word scandal, Kate Gosselin is making headlines for a leaked photo featuring what many are calling a racist gesture. The former reality star took to her blog to defend the photo in which the apparent “Asian impression” occurred.

Gosselin, 38, says that she’s “the last person [who] could be called a racist … In this family, we don’t see color or preference, we see qualities and hearts.” She goes on to explain how the photo, which was never intended to be shared online, reminds her of happier times with ex-husband Jon Gosselin — who is Korean-American — years ago.

“This was a happy memory of mine,” Gosselin says. “It was a happy time for and Jon, smiling and ‘goofing off’ together. Jon and I were opening fan mail together one afternoon … and when we opened this plastic Asian dress-up wig sent from a caring fan, we smiled, each taking turns posing in it and snapping photos (on my phone) of each other. Naturally, I ‘slanted’ my eyes to show him my best Asian impression, which made him smile.”

Though Gosselin defends her actions, she made it clear the photo in question was never meant for the public. “The blaring fact that remains is that a personal photo that left a warm and happy memory, was taken and misused without my permission and opportunistically turned into something that it never was intended to be,” Gosselin says.

Private or not, let’s try to refrain from making anything that can be construed as a racist gesture in the future, shall we?
