Upton tells her side of the story in a profile appearing in V Magazine. “I had just gotten my cover of Sports Illustrated that day,” the model explains. “I wasn’t used to that kind of media swirl.”
The whole thing began when Sophia Neophitou, the casting director for Victoria’s Secret, told the New York Times that Upton “was like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.” Nephitou also declared that Victoria’s Secret would never want to use a model like Upton.
“I had never met her, so it really came out of nowhere,” Upton now says, explaining that this was her “introduction to being in the spotlight and having people you’ve never met have an opinion of you.”
Fortunately for Upton, she has done just fine without Victoria’s Secret’s help.
