kings-of-leon-new-album-always-the-same-new-song-bottlerock-napa-gi.jpgKings of Leon debuted a new song off their forthcoming album at the inaugural BottleRock Napa Valley music festival Saturday (May 11) in Napa, Calif. Caleb Followill and company’s 90-minute set on the penultimate night of the fest was only their second U.S. performance since their mid-tour cancellation of 26 concert dates in 2011.

On top of that, the guys hadn’t played anywhere in six months — since the Dec. 1 Personal Fest in Buenos Aires — but told the massive BottleRock crowd, “We couldn’t have asked for a better first show back.” Caleb says, “I hope everyone’s having a good time tonight, because I know I have.”

Next Caleb announced, to the fans’ delight, that Kings of Leon have recorded a new album back home in Nashville, a detail which was recently confirmed by bassist Jared Followill, with a tentative release date for September. He introduced a brand new song from the record, which the band had not yet played anywhere. No word from Team Followill on the name of the track, though it’s rumored to be called “Always the Same.” Here is a sampling of the lyrics:

I don’t know where I’m gonna go, but it don’t matter to me
‘Cause it’s always this way, and I’m always the same
I’m not a man, everybody said, but it don’t matter to me
I’ll break my heart, tear it apart, it don’t matter to me, no no
I put a shine in your eye, it don’t matter to me
‘Cause it’s always this way, and I’m always the same

The Kings ended their 18-song set with an obligatory rendition of “Sex on Fire.” Caleb introduced the song by saying, “You guys have probably heard this song, so sing it ’cause I’m tired of singing it.” Of course they came back for a three-song encore when the crowd refused to disperse.

A BottleRock concertgoer uploaded footage of the Kings’ “Always the Same” performance to YouTube, which can be seen in the video below. For U.S. fans who have been waiting to see Kings of Leon for two years now, the guys have a handful of festival dates planned for 2013, including Hangout, The Governor’s Ball and Austin City Limits.
