kobe bryant fined 100k for using gay slur 550 Kobe Bryant fined $100,000 by NBA for using anti gay slur [Update]Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant is quite literally putting his money where his mouth is after the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a complaint about the athlete’s use of a gay slur during a televised game.

On Wednesday (April 13), NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that Bryant will be fined $100,000 for yelling “f***ing f**got” during Tuesday’s game versus the San Antonio Spurs.
“Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society,” says Stern.
As we reported earlier, Bryant issued a statement saying his outburst shouldn’t be taken literally — but maybe he shouldn’t be using those kind of terms in the first place?
“The NBA has sent a clear message to sports fans everywhere that anti-gay slurs have no place in the game,” says GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios about the Commissioner’s decision. “When such a prolific cultural institution like the NBA speaks out against hateful words, we are reminded that fair-minded Americans are siding with equality for all. This decision will serve as an important precedent that will help ensure a safer, more inclusive environment for fans and players everywhere, and we look forward to continuing our dialogue with the NBA.”
[Update 9:12 p.m. ET According to TMZ, Bryant will be appealing the fine, which he says is just “standard protocol” for a fine such as this and he has apologized to the president of another gay rights group, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), “in which he expressed his heartfelt regret for the hurt that his words caused.”]
