kristen kreuk beauty and the beast cw 325 Kristin Kreuk doesn't regret leaving 'Smallville' but glad to be back on TVZap2it: Are you a fan of television’s previous “Beauty and the Beast” series that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman?

Kristin Kreuk: I actually didn’t see the show very much. I think I was a little too young, and also didn’t have a TV. I’ve seen bits and pieces of it, though, and I like the themes behind “Beauty and the Beast.” In the Disney version and the fairy tale, the message is really beautiful and human, and I think it’s important for us to tell that story.

Zap2it: What, specifically, are its themes that appeal to you?

Kristin Kreuk: There’s the one aspect that people are different than they appear — that there’s much more to them than you perceive — and that goodness is an internal trait that is not necessarily reflected externally.

The other element I love in our version is, what are “beauty” and “beast” anyway? How do they exist within each of us? How is it that our choices reflect what we become? None of us is all good or all bad; we’re human, and it’s important for us to embrace all aspects of ourselves.

Zap2it: How do you look back at your decision to leave your Lana Lang role on “Smallville” when you did?

Kristin Kreuk: I was very ready to move on. TV is difficult; an hour-long show, in a leading role especially … I don’t know how Tom (Welling, who played Clark Kent) did it for 10 years, to be honest. That’s a long haul, but the women who are running this show are fantastic. And to be on such a strong female team, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.
