Armstrong will remain on the 15-member board, but his duties will be taken over by Vice Chairman Jeff Garvey, who was the founding chairman in 1997.

“This organization, its mission and its supporters are incredibly dear to my heart. Today therefore, to spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship,” says Armstrong in a statement.

The stepping down from Livestrong comes on the heels of Armstrong deciding not to fight the USADA and a 1000-page report being released detailing Armstrong’s alleged doping regimen, complete with sworn statements from several of his former teammates.

Armstrong’s statement does say that he will remain a visible advocate for cancer-related issues.
