lauryn hill prison sentence gi Lauryn Hill gets 3 month prison sentence for tax evasion

Though she payed her tax debt, singer Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in prison, with an additional three months on house arrest, after pleading guilty to tax evasion in 2012. Hill was charged with not paying the necessary taxes on the $1.8 million she earned between 2005 and 2007.
When addressing the judge on why she didn’t pay the taxes initially, Hill says, “I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that,” the Associated Press reports.
Hill’s lawyer noted before the sentencing that their client had payed $970,000 to satisfy the outstanding state and federal fees. Charged with three counts, Hill could have received a maximum three year prison sentence, though her lawyer had hoped simply for probation. No date has been announced for Hill to report to prison.
Hill is also making a return to the music world. She released her first song in three years, Friday (May 3) and announced a deal with Sony that will allow her to launch a label to release her own albums.
