lindsay lohan canyons teaser Lindsay Lohan's 'The Canyons' gets video on demand, theatrical release from IFCSelf-proclaimed “neo-noir thriller” “The Canyons” starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen has finally landed a U.S. distributor. IFC Films has acquired the film for a multi-platform release including theatrical, digital and on demand options.

IFC frequently releases indie films in theaters and on demand simultaneously, so the company is a logical fit for the controversial film directed by Paul Schrader (“American Gigolo”) and written by Bret Easton Ellis (“American Psycho”).

The low budget film raised $170,000 on Kickstarter and documented its production online. It received a perhaps unexpected publicity boost when The New York Times magazine ran a pretty awesome article about Lohan’s behavior on set titled “Here’s What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan In Your Movie.”

Among the details revealed in the article were Lohan’s reluctance to film a nude sex scene with Deen, Schrader’s mounting frustration with his star, producer Braxton Pope’s idea to get Steven Soderbergh to look at the footage and possibly recut the film (Schrader wouldn’t allow it), and the film’s rejection from the Sundance Film Festival.

In addition to IFC’s release, “The Canyons” will be a Special Presentation at the Film Society of Lincoln Center followed by a conversation between Schrader and New York Film Festival director of programming Kent Jones.

In IFC’s official announcement, Jones is quoted as calling Lohan’s “Canyons” performance “fearless” and “stunning.”

IFC president Jonathan Sehring adds: “This film is a wild ride through the psyche of Bret Easton Ellis courtesy of Paul Schrader. Lindsay Lohan is terrific as Tara and James Deen will be a big surprise for people.”

Viewers can see for themselves when IFC releases the film this summer.
