Michael Strahan‘s first day as a full-time TV host turned out pretty well, ratings-wise.
The premiere of “Live with Kelly and Michael” on Tuesday (Sept. 4) scored big gains over the show’s average for last September. In metered-market households (the only ratings available at the moment), the show scored a 3.9 rating/13 share, up 44 percent from the 2.7/9 “Live” averaged last September.
Strahan’s official debut as Kelly Ripa‘s co-host — he guest-hosted the show several times previously — was No. 1 in its time period in 14 of the nation’s 15 biggest markets and was “Live’s” highest-rated since shortly after Regis Philbin departed last November. It was also the best metered-market performance for “Live” on the day after Labor Day since 2003.
Word that Strahan, a former All-Pro defensive lineman with the New York Giants, would be Philbin’s replacement leaked a couple weeks ago. That didn’t seem to dampen viewers’ curiosity any.
