macklemore ryan lewis relapse gi Macklemore concerned about relapse after successful 2013

It’s hard to argue that the favorite breakout rapper of 2013 was Macklemore

With hits from “Thrift Shop” to “Same Love,” the mic-handling half of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis was seen at seemingly every music awards show and given a big boost of fame. But the 30-year-old, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, is concerned that he will slide back into drug and alcohol abuse now that the big year has come to an end.

“For me, what is a temptation is coming home off of the road, which is why this time period is interesting,” Macklemore tells ABC News via “Good Morning America.” “This is when I’ve fallen back before.”

Macklemore started releasing music in 2000, and first met Lewis in 2006. In 2008, Macklemore went to rehab for drug addiction and alcoholism, and after two years of being sober he relapsed again. When asked to describe the low point in his life, he says, “Isolation, broke, depressed, no reason to really live.”

“We didn’t work for the first three years that I knew him,” Lewis says. “I think that was probably at the centerpiece.”

The pair also open up about Macklemore’s controversial Trayvon Martin speech at the 2013 American Music Awards. Apparently that earned them more backlash than their single “Same Love.”

“The feedback from that, the hatred in the next 48 hours from that, surpassed all the hatred in the last year from ‘Same Love,'” Macklemore says.
