matthew weiner getty 320 'Mad Men': Creator Matthew Weiner still waiting for Season 5 green lightWhile AMC and producer Lionsgate continue their now-annual rite of wrangling over the next season of “Mad Men,” the Emmy-winning drama’s creator is sitting in showrunner limbo.

AMC said earlier this month that the show was more or less picked up — which is kind of like being a little bit pregnant — but creator Matthew Weiner says he hasn’t received an official go-ahead to return to work yet. He does say, however, that he’s “not looking for a new job.”

“I think all of AMC’s decisions about their scheduling and so forth have nothing to do with me, and I don’t have a deal yet,” Weiner says in an interview with EW. “I have every intention of making the show when they decide to work out their business with Lionsgate. I can’t wait to come back to work. I have said over and over in public that I want the show to go on and on and on until it has worn out its welcome with viewers and we can’t think of anything more for the characters to do.”

AMC president Charlie Collier has said that negotiations for Season 5 are “going well,” but there’s been no official word from any side yet. Weiner says he’s “dying to go back to work,” but like the rest of us he doesn’t know when that might be.

“The truth is I don’t even know what their plans are. We have not started writing. I am not back at work. My contract expired,” he tells EW. “They are fighting over a very lucrative property, and who is going to pay for it to get made. It’s one of the biggest perils of success — everyone wants a piece of it now and they are fighting over who is gonna get the biggest chunk.”
