jon hamm mad men s4 320 'Mad Men': Jon Hamm will direct the Season 5 premiereJon Hamm will be even more involved than usual with the season premiere of “Mad Men” next year.

Hamm says he’s set to make his directorial debut on the Season 5 opener. “The wheels have officially been set in motion to make that happen. It’s a very exciting challenge that I’m looking forward to with a mixture of utter fear and excitement,” he tells TVLine.

He will be the second member of the cast to helm an episode; John Slattery directed a pair of episodes, “The Rejected” and “Blowing Smoke,” last season.

Hamm, who’s currently getting big laughs for his jerkwad role in “Bridesmaids,” says directing an episode of “Mad Men” has been “in the back of my mind,” and he’s looking forward to working with the show’s cast and crew in a different way.

“It helps to have people you know and trust surrounding you,” he says. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have very little turnover not only in our cast but in our crew.”

Watching Slattery pull it off last year helped as well. “He handled it with such grace and ability and ease,” Hamm tells TVLine, joking that “I figured if he can do it, s***, I can do it too.”

“Mad Men” is scheduled to go back into production in August and will premiere in early 2012.
