homeland mandy patinkin plot twist Mandy Patinkin: 'Homeland' Season 3 plot twist brought me to tears

“Homeland” revealed a pretty big twist at the end of its Season 3 episode “Game On,” and Mandy Patinkin was very affected by it. Apparently the reveal that Carrie and Saul actually were in cahoots was enough to bring him to tears.

“[The writers] blow me away. When I read what happened in the fourth episode which was aired this past Sunday, I’m a very emotional person,” he tells “CBS This Morning.” “I couldn’t get over the creativity of the writing team. I mean, I read that … I couldn’t believe what they’d done.”

Considering the complicated — and sometimes out of character — relationship between Saul and Carrie in Season 3, this twist suddenly made the events of the first few episodes make more sense. Patinkin must have been pleased to have Carrie and Saul no longer at odds, because he says that their father-daughter dynamic is what originally drew him to the show.

“I could see immediately the potential for it, but as I became more involved with it, the nerve it touched for me was the lost art of listening that I feel we suffer from everywhere in our country and our Congress, the world at large,” he says. “I think it asks us on a family level — both the family of Saul, the Brody family, Saul and Carrie, the FBI, the people of the United States of America, the people of the world — to try to learn to listen to each other again.”

“Homeland” airs Sundays on Showtime at 9 p.m. ET.
