The Kickstarter to fund Zach Braff’s next movie might not be quite as successful as the one for “Veronica Mars” was, but it still met its goal. Now Braff is moving forward with casting the project and it sharing the news with the film’s backers before anyone else.
Tuesday (May 14), Braff announced the addition of Mandy Patinkin to the cast, taking on the role of his character’s father. So far Braff has raised over $2.5 million for the project. In an interview with THR, he says he never even bothered going to a studio to pitch the movie. “Since ‘Garden State,’ I’ve had so much experience of that being a nightmare,” Braff explains.
He also says financiers he spoke with budgeted the movie at $4 million, with a shoot happening in Toronto. Instead Braff is throwing in some of his own money, along with the Kickstarter funds and hopeful overseas distribution fees. With this method, he will retain total creative control over the project, which was his goal.
