It is the rare individual who graduates high school, heads off to college and knows exactly what they want to do for the rest of their life.
Caitlin FitzGerald, by contrast, knew she wanted to be an actor at the age of 6, after making an audience at a school play laugh. And not long after, she was introduced to something every actor gets to know very well.
“I remember not getting cast as Snow White in a production of ‘Snow White’ that they did at the local theater,” says the 30-year-old native of Camden, Maine, who stars as Libby Masters on the Showtime Sunday drama “Masters of Sex.” “And I got cast as a woodland animal or something. And I remember being, like, really outraged. I was like 7 or 8, I think, and being very angry that they didn’t understand the talent level that they had on their hands.
“And I was like, ‘What a missed opportunity!’ Little did I know that I would feel that over and over and over again over the next 25 years,” she says to Zap2it, laughing.
FitzGerald, who played Meryl Streep’s daughter in the 2009 feature film “It’s Complicated,” admits she was initially nervous about taking on the role of Libby because she didn’t want to play a stereotypical 1950s housewife.
“When they offered me the part,” she says, “I spoke with the writers and the writer/creator, Michelle Ashford, and one of our producers, Sarah Timberman, and sort of voiced my concerns. And they really agreed with me that they did not want a one-dimensional character. And it’s been really interesting to find the ways in which Libby — you know, she really actually wants to be a typical ’50s housewife, I think, but just isn’t. And she’s always sort of struggling against this mold that she’s trying to fit into but doesn’t and that’s interesting.
“I think her life would be so much easier if she was just really dumb,” she says, laughing. “But she’s not.”
