happy meal McDonalds' Happy Meals: Will fruit make them healthier?Succumbing to pressure from parents and consumer groups, McDonald’s on Tuesday (July 26) announced that they’ll be making their signature Happy Meals a little bit healthier.

Starting in September, the fast food chain will roll out changes to the boxed kid meals that include a shrunken portion of french fries and the addition of fruit. According to the Los Angeles Times, the company first experimented with cutting the fries entirely, but that raised an outcry from kids and parents.

“People come to McDonald’s and, first of all, they want the choice and the control to be theirs, but their expectation of a Happy Meal does include a fry,” Jan Fields, president of McDonald’s USA, tells the LA Times.

Apple slices will also no longer be offered with caramel dipping sauce and — says a spokesperson for the fast food giant — soft drinks will no longer be marketed directly to children.

The company is also pledging to reduce the amount of sodium in its entire menu by 15 percent.

What do you think? Will a healthier Happy Meal make you more likely to eat — or allow your kids to eat — at McDonald’s?
