danell leyva john orozco getty Men's gymnastics: Danell Leyva and John Orozco vie for men's all around titleThe men’s gymnastics individual all-around competition took place Wednesday (Aug. 1) at the 2012 Summer Olympics, with U.S. teammates Danell Leyva (above, left) and John Orozco (above, right) as the No. 1 and No. 4 ranked men after the qualifying day Saturday.

Unfortunately, the pommel horse proved to be their undoing. It was the second apparatus for both men and both had uncharacteristically low scores, with a 13.5 for Leyva and a 12.566 for Orozco. It left them in quite a hole from which to dig themselves out.

They did their best over the next four rotations, however, and Leyva ended up taking the bronze medal behind Japan’s Kohei Uchimura and Germany’s Marcel Nguyen. Even if Leyva had performed a pommel routine equal to his qualifying score of 14.866, it would not have been enough to overtake Uchimura for gold, who performed beautifully on each rotation. Leyva would have earned silver, however.

Orozco could not quite battle back as far as Leyva did from his pommel horse score, but he did finish a respectable 8th place.
