Moving on from “The Wrestler,” Mickey Rourke intends to star in another sports flick. This time, a biopic about Gareth Thomas.
Thomas, a Welsh rugby player, is one of the few openly gay men in the sports world.
On “Alan Carr’s Chatty Man” Sunday evening (Dec. 26), Rourke discussed his hopes to bring the headline making athlete to the big screen.
As Alan Carr phrased it, the film would be about “a gay rugby player.”
“You’re not supposed to say that,” Rourke teases. “This is the one thing that he and I talked about. This is something that’s really important. We’re doing a movie about a man who plays rugby who is gay.”
“Sorry, I shouldn’t be so homophobic,” Carr (who is openly gay) retorts.
“It’s one of the toughest, hardest sports in the world to play. They play with no pads… it’s a really brutal sport,” the actor explains. “To be a man who plays rugby who is gay and to live with that secret for the amount of years that Gareth had, to perform at the high level that he performed at, it takes a lot of courage.”
The rugby star known as “Alfie” has stated that when it comes to his public persona, the sport should come first.
“I don’t want to be known as a gay rugby player. I am a rugby player first and foremost,” he tells the Daily Mail.
“It is the toughest, most macho of male sports, and with that comes an image,” Thomas continues. “In many ways, it is barbaric, and I could never have come out without first establishing myself and earning respect as a player.”
And earn respect he certainly did. Before coming out in 2009, Thomas broke his nose five times, broke both shoulders and lost eight teeth. He’s been named to the Welsh national rugby team more times than any other man.
What do you think, can Rourke pull off one of the greatest rugby players in the world?
