Miley Cyrus has been over her relationship with former fiancé Liam Hemsworth for a long time. Though the pair only officially called it quits recently, Cyrus has been ready for the split for months. Her need for a breakup is what her new song “Wrecking Ball” is about, she says.

“I wrote it while I was working on Valentine’s Day — emotionally it was such a hard time,” Cyrus tells Fashion magazine (via Us Weekly). She says song is “about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It’s a time when you want to leave but you can’t. It’s also about moving on.”

That explains why Cyrus wasn’t really concerned about Hemsworth during her recent Rolling Stone interview. Breakup rumors have been swirling about the pair for months, and it sounds like it was for good reason.

However, in her interview with Rolling Stone, Cyrus credited her tears in her “Wrecking Ball” music video to the fact her dog had just passed away.

Cyrus also talks to Fashion magazine about her controversial VMAs performance. She says that the original performance was a lot more risqué than what made it on MTV.

“I was trying to slap Robin’s a** but no one saw it! Believe me! MTV edited so much,” she says. “They cut almost everything I did. I’m proud of that performance. I feel like music is really stale right now.”
