It was a huge night for Miranda Lambert at the 48th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards Sunday (April 7), and an emotional night at that. The spunky country music star broke down in tears and had to choke her way through the acceptance speech for her biggest award of the night, Female Vocalist of the Year.
“I just want to say really quickly that last night, a huge dream of mine came true,” says Miranda between stifled sobs. “Because I went from being a little girl singing into a hairbrush to watching Shania Twain with Faith Hill and Reba MacEntire and Kelly Clarkson. And I cried all night because I’ll never not be a fan of those beautiful women. Thank you so much for this.”
Several ACM performers, including John Mayer and Brad Paisley, had on-stage run-throughs Saturday as part of the Academy’s annual ACM Fan Jam.
Miranda won three of the four categories for which she was nominated. In addition to Female Vocalist, she took home trophies for Song of the Year — shared with husband Blake Shelton — and Single Record of the Year, both for “Over You.” Shelton, who co-hosted the show with Entertainer of the Year winner Luke Bryan, bragged while introducing his wife’s performance of “Mama’s Broken Heart,” “I got to see her naked this mornin’.” He also credited Miranda with teaching him “how to write a good song.”
Leading up the ACMs, Miranda said she was most excited about the Song of the Year nomination with Blake. “I don’t think it will ever happen again for a husband and wife to write a song that special,” Miranda says.
