miss russia haters Miss Russia haters claim Elmira Abdrazakova is 'not Slavic enough'

Elmira Abdrazakova, the recently-crowned Miss Russia, already has haters coming out of the woodwork. Detractors claim that the 18-year-old is “not Slavic enough” to have earned the top title.

“The nationality question — I don’t really understand it, I don’t understand why men would write to a young girl offensive things about her nationality,” Abdrazakova tells Sky News. “It humiliates first of all not me, but those people who write it. It was bizarre for me when men were writing things like that to me, I was surprised we have people of that sort here.”

The complaints seem to stem from the fact that Abdrazakova’s father is Tatar, one of Russia’s ethnic minorities. Though she was born in Kazakhstan, Abdrazakova was raised in Russia and considers herself to be fully Russian. So do the important authorities, Sky News reports.

But Abdrazakova was the subject of such vitriol that she was forced to shut down her social media sites. One hater called her an “ordinary Azeri parsley seller” while another claimed she’d be a “real beauty among sheep.” Abdrazakova was crowned Miss Russia on March 2 and will represent Russia at the 2013 Miss World pageant in September.

“For many teenage girls Miss Russia will become a role model, a measure of beauty,” she says. “Maybe some girls will look at me and get inspired by my experience to grow, to develop, to work hard. I hope they can see that in life you can reach something without big money.”
