modern family lily bleep 'Modern Family': Lily's bad word draws pre air protestAn anti-profanity group has asked ABC to pull Wednesday’s (Jan. 18) “Modern Family” because toddler Lily says a bad word in the episode.

The No Cussing Club, a group founded in 2007 by then-high school student McKay Hatch, sent its request to ABC on Tuesday. The network is going ahead with the episode, titled “Little Bo Bleep,” but hasn’t commented on the protest.

In the episode, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) learns a new word that rhymes with “duck,” horrifying her dads Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). The story is mostly about how Cam and Mitchell deal with Lily’s outburst, which is something co-creator Steve Levitan says “as parents, we’ve all been through.”

“ABC will tell you ‘Modern Family’ gets away with a lot, because I think it’s all about context,” Levitan tells EW. “We are not a sexually charged show. It has a very warm tone, so people accept it more. I’m sure we’ll have some detractors.”

And so he does. Hatch, now a college student, tells the AP that “Our main goal is to stop this from happening. If we don’t, at least ABC knows that people all over the world don’t want to have a 2-year-old saying the ‘F-bomb’ on TV.” The No Cussing Club claims about 35,000 members in several dozen countries.

Stonestreet made light of the protest Wednesday on Twitter, writing, “So focused on the ‘cussing’ in tonight’s ‘Modern Family,’ everyone seems to have neglected Ty [Burrell], Jesse, Ed’s [O’Neill] and my full frontal scene.”

For the record, “Modern Family’s” producers had Aubrey say “fudge” during filming of the episode, which airs at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
