sebastien de la cruz game 3 nba finals national anthem racist tweets gi NBA Finals: 11 year old mariachi singer performs national anthem at Game 3, sparks racist frenzyAh, Twitter — where racists can spout their anonymous vitriol freely.

The trolls came out in full force Tuesday night (June 11) after Sebastien De La Cruz, an 11-year-old mariachi singer who competed on “America’s Got Talent” last season, performed the national anthem during Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs.

De La Cruz, a San Antonio native (making him, you know, a legal citizen), was brought in last-minute to replace former Hootie and the Blowfish frontman and recent country star Darius Rucker. He performed the anthem rather flawlessly, though it wasn’t the technique of his performance that had the racist tweeters all riled up.

We’re not going to compile all the nasty tweets for you here because that would only make us cry, but here are two of the, err, tamer examples: “Is this the American National Anthem or the Mexican Hat Dance? Get this lil kid out of here” and “This kid is Mexican why is he singing the national anthem. #yournotamerican #gohome”

Apparently, De La Cruz forgot he needed to present a birth certificate for proof of his citizenship to appease the bigots at home before performing.

The singer is handling the backlash with aplomb, however. During an interview with Fox San Antonio on Wednesday, De La Cruz maturely said, “”They don’t know my life. My father was actually in the navy for a pretty long time, and I actually salute him today for that. I just wanna thank him and to be able to sing the national anthem. People don’t know, they just assume that I’m just Mexican. But I’m not from Mexico, I’m from San Antonio, born and raised. True San Antonio Spurs fan.”
