ncis-shield-voice-timeslot-battle.jpgThe second full night of the 2013-14 TV season presents maybe the first big timeslot battle of the fall. Two of TV’s biggest returning shows will face off against the most heavily hyped new show of the fall.

So, in the battle of “NCIS,” “The Voice” and “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday (Sept. 24), which should you watch live and which should you save for later?

The first part is easy: “The Voice” is going on the DVR. There’s a lot of padding in a two-hour audition episode, which makes it easy to speed through later.

“NCIS” vs. “SHIELD,” however, is a much tougher call. The CBS drama will begin its goodbye to Ziva (Cote de Pablo), which has been on the minds of fans throughout the summer hiatus, with its season premiere. “SHIELD,” meanwhile, is an ambitious attempt to bring the wildly successful Marvel movie franchise to TV — without the stars of its movies.

It’s really a coin flip here — but we’re going with “SHIELD” live and “NCIS” on the DVR. Either way, it seems likely shows later in the night might get pushed aside so people can watch whichever of the two they recorded.

The odd shows out at 8 are FOX’s “Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which had decent premiere ratings a week ago but are likely to take a hit this week. “Brooklyn,” at least, will end up on the DVR as well.

At 9 p.m., ABC has a pair of new comedies, “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife,” going up against hour two of “The Voice,” the premiere of “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS and “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project” on FOX. “The Voice” is already taping, so that’s taken care of. We’re going with a split live viewing here, with “New Girl” at 9 and “Trophy Wife,” one of the better new comedies of the fall, at 9:30. “The Goldbergs” isn’t bad either, so it’s worth a DVR look, along with “NCIS: LA” and “Mindy.”

The 10 o’clock hour brings two returning shows — CBS’ “Person of Interest” and NBC’s “Chicago Fire” — to a new night, plus a new series in ABC’s “Lucky 7”  and “Sons of Anarchy” on FX. “Person of Interest” gets the live nod here since it ended on a cliffhanger last season, with the others saved for later.

What’s your watch/record strategy for Tuesday?
