wet hot american summer netflix Netflix sets its sights on a 'Wet Hot American Summer' prequelNetflix may give new life to a classic comedy. The streaming service is reportedly in talks to develop a prequel series based on the cult classic film “Wet Hot American Summer.”

Netflix is said to nearing completion on a deal with movie creators David Wain and Michael Showalter for the series, which would feature the original cast reprising their characters from the film.

“Wet Hot American Summer” was originally released by Universal in 2001 and was a box office bomb, bringing in less than $300,000. However the film has lived on and developed a cult following in DVD land.

The 2001 film starred then up and coming stars Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Meloni, Paul Rudd, Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Ian Black and many others.

The potential prequel comes after Showalter and Wain repeatedly teased they had a follow-up in the works. Wain told The Playlist they had already started writing a script in 2012. While Showalter got more specific at an appearance on “Geeking out with Kerri Doherty,” revealing the script was a prequel taking place six months to a year before the original.

Netflix has had a lot of success with their streaming comedies, as both “Orange Is The New Black” and “Arrested Development” have been big hits for the network.
