NBC debuted “The New Normal” Monday night (Sept. 10), the new comedy about a male gay couple (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who pursue surrogacy via single mom Goldie (Georgia King) in order to start their family. Ellen Barkin also stars as Goldie’s grandmother, who is very much against gay marriage and gays as parents.
What did you think of the premiere? It’s certainly been embroiled in controversy. One Million Moms called for a boycott, and NBC affiliate KSL out of Utah has refused to air it because of possible explicit or crude content.
Star Andrew Rannells tells Zap2it that he hopes the very people calling for the boycott tuned in and may see that it’s not exactly what they thought it was.
“I think they might be surprised that both sides of the gay marriage and gay parent issue is brought up. It’s in a comedic way, but both sides are shown,” says Rannells. “As we move forward with the series, it will become more apparent how it’s not a single-focus show. There’s the gay couple, there’s the single mom trying to get her life back on track and Ellen Barkin’s character trying to start her life over, so we cover a lot of bases here.”
“We’re making a show about how much love it takes to start a family,” he adds.
Rannells also hopes that like shows that have come before and shined a new light on gay people and families, “New Normal” will continue to do so.
“‘Will & Grace’ introduced or showed how harmless homosexuals can be and ‘Modern Family’ took it to another level in showing that they can be parents,” says Rannells. “And this show shows the genesis of becoming a parent, as a gay man.”
“Hopefully we can spark some conversations in households that haven’t happened before. Through the love and the comedy on the show, if it could change the minds or at least start the conversation, that would be wonderful,” he finishes.
