rupert murdoch NewsCorp's Rupert Murdoch collects full $12.5M bonus

While NewsCorp struggles to repair its reputation after July’s massive phone hacking scandal, top man Rupert Murdoch collected the full amount of his target bonus for the 2011 fiscal year — $12.5 million.

Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul behind NewsCorp and defunct British tabloid News of the World, collected $33.3 million this past fiscal year (bolstered by his max bonus). Murdoch will have to hope his wad of cash can provide some  comfort, as many expect he will be called in front of high court later in the year.

James Murdoch, Rupert’s son and the man in charge of NewsCorp’s European and Asian operations, collected a $6 million bonus. The younger Murdoch is also expected back in high court later in the year.

Here is a list of some other NewsCorp 2011 bonuses, as reported by the LA Times; please feel free to juxtapose this against the estimated 200 News of the World employees who lost their jobs when the paper shut down:

  • Rupert Murdoch – $12.5 million bonus
  • James Murdoch – $6 million bonus
  • Chase Carey (COO) – $10 million bonus
  • Roger Ailes (Chairman, Fox News) – $1.5 million bonus
  • David DeVoe (CFO) – $5 million bonus
UPDATE: Moments before posting this story, news outlets report that James Murdoch has declined his $6 million bonus.  Murdoch will look into whether or not he will accept the bonus at a later date.
