night-shift-renewed-nbc.JPGNBC is keeping the doctors and nurses of “The Night Shift” on call for another year.

The network has picked up a second season of the drama series, an NBC rep confirms to Zap2it. The show has pulled in decent ratings following “America’s Got Talent.” It’s averaging 7.9 million viewers and a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49 in the “most current” ratings (a mix of same-day and Live +7 numbers). Prior to “Under the Dome’s” return Monday (June 30), it was the most-watched scripted show on the broadcast networks this summer.

The series, from writers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, follows the staff working the overnight hours at a San Antonio hospital. It stars Eion Macken, Jill Flint, Daniella Alonso, Ken Leung, Brendan Fehr, Jeananne Goossen, Robert Bailey Jr., J.R. Lemon and Freddy Rodriguez. Scott Wolf has a recurring part.

NBC has picked up 14 episodes for Season 2, which will likely air in summer 2015. “The Night Shift’s” eight-episode first season is set to conclude on July 15.
