Stanford will play Cole, a time traveler from the near future who returns to the present day in hopes of stopping a lethal virus from being released and starting a worldwide plague. It’s the role Bruce Willis played in the 1996 movie that forms the basis for the pilot.
Amanda Schull (“Suits,” “Pretty Little Liars”) has also joined the pilot’s cast as Dr. Cassandra Railly, who gets pulled into Cole’s mission. Madeleine Stowe played a similar part in the film. Syfy has also named Natalie Chaidez (“In Plain Sight,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”) as executive producer and showrunner and hired Jeffrey Reiner (“Friday Night Lights”) to direct the pilot (he’ll also executive produce).
Stanford is not the only “Nikita” veteran working on “12 Monkeys.” Pilot writers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who are co-exec producers, also worked on The CW series.
Stanford is the second “Nikita” cast member to join a new show in the wake of the show’s impending end (the six-episode final season premieres Nov. 22). Shane West is starring in “Salem” from WGN America.
