Tom Daley is a British diver who took home a bronze medal at the 2012 London Summer Olympic games. He’s quite popular in England for several reasons, not the least of which is because he’s very good-looking.

He says in the above video that he gets asked a lot about his relationships and if he has a girlfriend, which he’s never really been comfortable talking about. But he felt like it was time to share this message with his fans:

For me, honesty is something that I really do believe in and I’ve always been honest. I may have been vague, but I’ve always been honest. One thing I’ve never really felt that comfortable about are my relationships because it’s what I get asked — do you have a girlfriend, who are you seeing? I’ve been dating girls, I’ve never really had a serious relationship to talk about. Now I kind of feel ready to talk about my relationships.

Come spring this year, my life changed massively when I met someone and it made me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. That someone is a guy. It did take me by surprise a little bit … but it wasn’t until spring this year that things just clicked, it felt right. My whole world just changed right there and then.

Of course I still fancy girls, but right now I’m dating a guy and I couldn’t be happier. It just really does feel right.

People are gonna have their opinions and people are gonna make a big deal of this — is it a big deal? I don’t think so. … But I wanted to say something and I feel like now I’m ready.

[My dad] always said to me as long as you’re happy, I’m happy and right now I couldn’t be happier. My mom’s been so supportive as well. … I’m still Tom, I still want to win an Olympic gold medal in Rio 2016 for Britain. I’m glad I got it off my chest, I hope you can join me on my journey to Rio too.

He right that it really shouldn’t be a big deal, but we think he knows that every time a famous person — actor or athlete or singer — comes out as gay or bisexual, it makes it that much easier for non-famous people who might be struggling with coming out.
