Upon learning this sad news, two men with hearts of gold are doing what they can to save Sochi’s strays.

Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska and American Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy have both risen to the occasion. Deripaska, one of Russia’s richest men, has used his fortunes to build shelters for the stray pups in Baranovka, a nearby town. It’s estimated he’s rescued 140 dogs so far, with many of them successfully adopted into homes.

Meanwhile, Kenworthy has found himself so smitten with a litter of stray puppies that he’s  doing all he can to make sure they can return to the States with him.

“Spent all afternoon playing with a gang of stray puppies here in Sochi!” he writes on Facebook. “Looking into finding a way to bring them home with me but also don’t want to take them away from their mama because she was being super cute and protective over them. I bought them some food and I’ll go visit them again tomorrow.”

He adds on Twitter that he’s also made plans for the pack to visit the vet so they can be vaccinated. “Also, for the people wondering, I’ve lined up kennels 4 the pups & made vaccination appointments,” he writes.” Doing all I can to bring them home w/ me!”

These two win gold medals in humanity, that’s for sure.
