matt lauer 2014 winter olympics Olympics 2014: Matt Lauer takes over for Bob Costas, how'd he do?For the first time since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan (including Summer Games), someone other than Bob Costas hosted the primetime Olympics broadcast for NBC when “Today” anchor Matt Lauer was pressed into service following an increasingly severe eye infection that has sidelined Costas.

So, how’d he do?

Lauer kicked off the broadcast giving an update on Costas’ condition, saying, “I saw him in the hotel this morning. He looked a little like the loser in a prize fight, so if anyone deserves a night off, it’s Bob. Bob, if you’re watching, get better, relax, we’ll see you back here tomorrow night.”

Lauer later cracks, “I keep expecting Costas to follow in the footsteps of Willis Reed and hobble heroically in and take us through the second half, but so far no action in the wings, so we will move forward and turn to snowboarding.”

Now that would’ve been hilarious. Overall, while it sounded distinctly odd not to hear Costas’ dulcet tones conducting interviews and taking us in and out of the various segments, Lauer did a fine job.
