The 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony kicked off just after noon ET/9 p.m. Sochi time, though it won’t air in the United States until Friday’s (Feb. 7) primetime NBC broadcast. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some sneak peeks. Above, check out some behind-the-scenes footage of the event, which production designer George Tyspin says is “mind-boggling” in its size.

NBC has also announced that a special Olympics preview will air at the top of the broadcast, narrated by award-winning “Game of Thrones” actor Peter Dinklage: Winter is coming, you see.

Below, the U.S. athletes are busy tweeting their pics from the ceremony. Snowboarder Shaun White looks … less than pleased to be wearing the “stylish” U.S. sweater, while a quartet of Olympic skiers look like they might rob a bank on the way to the ceremony.
